Introduction to Heritage Conservation

Skills:

research | design | presentation | professional writing

Tools:

Chicago Historic Resources Survey | Adobe Photoshop | Canva Pro

Description:

These exercises integrate the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guides for Archaeology and Historic Preservation and the City of Chicago’s Criteria for Landmark Designation to research and nominate two properties for their respective heritage. Research into Faro Culebrita, Puerto Rico, and 6017 S. Justine St., West Englewood, Chicago, required contextualizing their histories against the landmarking criteria to make a case for each property’s preservation.

For both sites, creative arguments into conserving the heritage of minoritized people, recognizing important BIPOC figures, and understanding Latinx, Caribbean, and Black contributions to the U.S. were the tying theme.

Responsibilities:

  • Internalized the criteria set forth by the national historic preservation standards and the Chicago landmark qualifications to identify appropriate sites.
  • Researched locations by finding historic records, reference texts and sites, and reading personal accounts to form a nominating narrative for landmark status.
  • Created and presented findings by segmenting historic context alongside the criteria each site met.
