Description:
Utilizing online geospatial tools and presenting them through interactive web applications is the objective of this project, which displayed public housing complexes across Chicago that the Chicago Housing Authority demolished by their number of units. The project utilizes general information from the city’s Plan for Transformation, beginning in 1999, to narrate the engineered displacement in communities the policy targeted. Uniquely, this application used data acquired from a self-submitted Freedom of Information Act request, a new professional experience.
The web application was created through ArcGIS online mechanics, and features layered and symbolized data, interactive points and labeling, and representative media of on the CHA’s campaign.
Responsibilities:
- Prepared and geocoded spatial data on demolished Chicago Housing Authority properties by the number of units torn down.
- Created visual lexicon to match dark theme of storymap, including intuitive color grading and symbology for points and basemaps.
- Wrote narrative introducing the Plan for Transformation’s purpose, shortcomings, and impacts to give context to media and maps.
