Description:

The presentation briefs the World Outreach v City of Chicago and Trinity Evangelical v City of Peoria cases in the U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit, as model cases on the applicability of the Religious Land Use And Institutionalized Persons Act. Understanding and presenting on influential cases in land use law was the goal of this exercise, which intersected spaces of religious freedom to urbanism.

Consisting of reading and interpreting a case, outlining the procedural history and identifying the central issue and its holding were the key objectives. The assignment sought to enhance understanding of how jurisprudence is a realm of urban planning that sets constitutional limits to how land is envisioned.

Responsibilities:

  • Read, interpreted, and briefed two cases in land use law to determine the legal issue and jurisprudential holdings as they applied to urban planning practice.
  • Outlined procedural history of both cases before their rulings by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Designed and presented cases by reducing complexity, sectioning information, and translating legal language into familiar language.
